REMEMBERING 9/11 LEST WE FORGET BY TIM CLARKE

As memories of that faithful day have surfaced this month the only clear memory I have of that morning waking up to the news of the twin towers is shouting to the TV, “Is that all you’ve got!”, you expletive deleted’.

Well, years and times have changed and this year I heard the story of the Newfoundlanders who when the U.S. closed its airspace took in some 30+ airliners and their passengers with the entire island pitching in accommodations, as the Newfoundlanders say, “came from away,” referring to anyone who visits. The mayor declared an emergency and all the churches, and any public spaces were turned into dormitories and kitchens set up to feed everyone. Their beloved ice rink was turned into a giant refrigerator for fresh foods. And for a few days these heroes shined brightly in the hearts of so many. So beloved was this act of kindness that the Broadway musical,” Came From Away,” has played around the world. One of the prominent women in this small miracle, when asked about all her efforts placed her hand to her heart said that it felt so good it was all worth it.

As many of my loyal readers, (must be at least 3 or 4 out there), know I am on the board of Rebuilding Together Mountain Communities and in the 9 years as such I have enjoyed helping low-income homeowners stay warm, safe and dry in their own homes. Whether it’s the signature event of Rebuilding Day on the last Saturday of April, the year-round emergency home repairs with paid contractors, or my favorite, installing bathroom grab bars to give our neighbors a better grip in the tub, I still get a great feeling inside when I can help.

You too can get this heartfelt feeling as a volunteer on Rebuilding Day or contributing funds to help our neighbors. However, giving of your time to talk to neighbors informing them that the services we provide are free to qualified neighbors will give you a great feeling too. Sometimes, just taking the time to talk to neighbors and those you casually meet in your daily life gives you and that person a great feeling as well.

Our organization is here to lift the burdens of home repairs off your shoulders. To learn more, contact us at: info@rtmc.build.
